This is a reflection on the recently conducted NEx workshop during ACI Fall convention on “FRP Composites in the Face of Fire: Insights from Research and Industry.“ As the FRP fire resistance is a key challenge and interest to the industry, NEx brought together leading experts, researchers, and industry professionals who delved into the latest developments and innovations in ensuring fire safety of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites in construction. This workshop was co-sponsored by ACI 216, Fire Resistance and Fire Protection of Structures and ACI 440 Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement. The engaging workshop featured the following speakers:
Steve Szoke, ACI, “Code Requirements and Permissible Applications for Concrete Internally Reinforced with GFRP”.
Venkatesh Kodur, MSU, “Strategies for Enhancing Fire Performance of Concrete Structures incorporating Fiber Reinforced Polymers”.
Mark Green, Queens University, “Fire Performance of Concrete Structures with Internal and External FRP Reinforcement”.
Steven Nolan, Florida DOT, “Highway Bridge Fire Damage Experiences and Fire Resilience Considerations for Bridges with FRP.”
Shuna Ni, University of Maryland, “Fire Impact of Vehicle Fire Exposure on Polymer Concrete Overlays”.
Tarek Alkhrdaji, Structural technologies “Fire Resistance of Concrete Structures Strengthened with Externally Applied FRP Reinforcement”.
Hassan AlKhalifah, Aramco, “Experimental Investigation and Finite Element Simulation of GFRP Reinforced Concrete on Grade Slab Exposed to Fire”.
Capra Williams, University of Notre Dame, “State of the art regarding heat and fire resistance of pultruded FRP structural members in the AEC industry.”
Shamim Rashid-Sumar, NRMCA and Robert Sculthorpe, ICFMA “Fire safety testing of ICF wall construction”
For those who missed the event, recordings of the speaker presentations will soon be available on NEx's website and YouTube channel, providing a valuable resource for those looking to explore these exciting topics.
